Astropy FITS Logical VLA Fix
Open-source contribution to Astropy - Fixed 14-year-old FITS standard compliance bug
A significant open-source contribution to Astropy (4.3k+ stars), one of Python’s foundational astronomy libraries. This project involved diagnosing and resolving a 14-year-old FITS standard compliance bug in the binary table I/O module that had existed since the original PyFITS implementation in 2011.
Project Overview
Astropy is a core library for astronomy in Python, used by researchers worldwide for handling astronomical data. The bug affected how logical variable-length arrays (VLAs) were stored in FITS files, causing invalid data to be written that violated the FITS specification standards.
Impact: This was the first identification of this bug despite the code being reviewed and used extensively in the astronomical community for over a decade.
The Bug
Problem Statement: Astropy’s FITS binary table implementation was writing logical variable-length arrays incorrectly:
- Expected (FITS spec): ASCII codes 84 (‘T’), 70 (‘F’), or 0 (NULL)
- Actual behavior: Numeric values 1, 0, 0 (treating None as 0)
- Impact: Generated invalid FITS files that violated astronomical data standards
Root Cause: Two code paths were missing logical VLA handling:
- Writer (
column._makep): Converted Python bool to numeric 0/1 instead of ASCII codes - Reader (
fitsrec._convert_other): Didn’t recognize logical VLAs, returned raw integers
Solution Architecture
Design Decision: dtype=object for VLAs
After analyzing multiple approaches, I chose to use dtype=object with Python bool/None types because:
- ✅ VLAs inherently require object arrays for variable-length data
- ✅ Python native types (
True,False,None) provide cleanest user API - ✅ Consistent with existing VLA behavior in Astropy
- ✅ 30% less conversion code compared to byte-based approach
- ✅ Minimal performance impact (I/O-bound operations)
Implementation Details
Files Modified:
-
astropy/io/fits/column.py(Writer fix)- Modified
_makep()function to convert logical inputs to ASCII codes - Handles:
None → 0,False/'F' → 70,True/'T' → 84 - Validates string inputs for correct mapping
- Modified
-
astropy/io/fits/fitsrec.py(Reader fix)- Modified
_convert_other(): Convert ASCII codes back to Python types - Modified
_get_scale_factors(): Recognize logical VLAs (p_format == ‘L’) - Modified
_get_heap_data(): Convert object arrays to bytes for writing - Modified
_scale_back(): Skip conversion for logical VLAs
